Spokane Credit Unions unite for Habitat for Humanity Day

Six area credit unions volunteered for Community Day at Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, August 1st. Credit Union employees from United Health Services, Prime Source, Global, Horizon, STCU, and Numerica Credit Union worked two shifts at the Deer Park Habitat Site where two houses are currently being completed. This event was especially important for the credit union crew as all their volunteer hours were donated to a fellow credit union employee who has recently been approved for a habitat home.

Over thirty credit union employees with diverse levels of carpentry skills came together to tile floors, paint the home's exteriors and install siding. Volunteers worked in two four hour shifts with some choosing to work all day. "What started out as a way to collaborate and network among credit unions while giving back to the community ended up meaning so much more knowing that we were giving back to someone within our credit union family", Said Wendie Ellis of Numerica Credit Union, "Being able to put a face to a cause helps your connect better with the event and the community itself." While the houses being completed won't be the one purchased by the credit union co-worker, the hours will go towards her required volunteer hours that must be completed before her house can be started.

Habitat homes are not given but purchased through a combination of volunteer hours donated and reduced pricing. With the belief that every person should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live, Habitat families are selected using three factors: the family's level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program, and their ability to repay the loan through an affordable payment plan. Volunteers at Saturday's event were grateful to be able to donate their time to help a fellow employee achieve the dream of homeownership.

Community Day at Habitat for Humanity is just one way credit unions give back to their community. This volunteer event was set up by the Spokane Chapter of Credit Unions. Spokane Chapter Almost Sweeps Chapter Awards at NWCUA's Amplify Gala

As your elected board for the Spokane Chapter we were very honored to accept the Chapter Awards for Education, Advocacy, Philosophy in Action, and overall Best Practice at this year's NWCUA Amplify Convention. Every year, credit union chapters across the states of Oregon and Washington submit their entries for the Chapter Awards focusing on Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Philanthropy, and overall Best Practice. Your Spokane Chapter was proud to accept four of the five awards given at the Amplify Gala held on October 9th. Our awards submissions included valued events such as Hike the Hill, in which we sent 9 credit union employees to represent our chapter and area credit unions, the Spokane Chapter Golf Tournament where we raised over $30,000, including a $10,000 Miracle Match for CU for Kids and CULAF, and our free of charge BSA and Robbery training, offered every year to our members. "Wow! This chapter is a wonderful example for other chapters throughout the region", cited one Chapter Awards judge. We are very grateful for our member credit union and vendor participation in these events. As representatives of the Spokane area credit unions, we take our commitment to the four Chapter Pillars of Leadership, Education, Advocacy, and Philanthropy to heart and were very pleased to receive recognition for our efforts in accepting these awards on behalf of our Chapter Members. Thank you for your continued support of the Spokane Chapter. We look forward to a very active and successful 2015.
